History Of Blue Cross Blue Shield Of Illinois

Blue Cross Blue Shield is actually a big family of independent companies sharing the same trusted name. Their roots date back to 1929 when Justin Ford Kimball founded a small insurance company providing 21 days of hospital coverage for $6 per year.

Using Kimball's model, 2 Chicago businessmen named Taylor Strawn and Charles Schweppe invested in a non-profit prepayment plan for Chicago residents. They enrolled their first member in 1936 and began using the Blue Cross symbol in 1939.

In 1947, another non-profit plan called Blue Shield was introduced in Chicago. At that time they were a separate company from Blue Cross. By 1950, Blue Cross and Blue Shield plans were beginning to spread across the entire state.

The 2 companies finally merged in 1975 creating what is now Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois. Their headquarters is still in Chicago, Illinois.
