History of Capital BlueCross
Capital BlueCross began in 1933 as Easton Hospital Association. In its first year of service, the yearly cost of coverage was only $10 and with this prepayment came 21 days of hospital service without charge and a 25 percent discount on all hospital bills for seven weeks after.
Almost six years later, Easton Hospital Association became Hospital Service Plan of the Lehigh Valley, which would later become Blue Cross of the Lehigh Valley and finally Capital BlueCross in 1965.
Twenty years later, as a result of a merger the Capital BlueCross service area expanded to 21 counties in Pennsylvania. By the late nineties, Capital BlueCross was celebrating its 60th year and serving 1.4 million members receiving $1 billion in health care benefits.
