IBC Wellness Programs

Independence Blue Cross offers wellness programs which are designed to help people lead healthy lives and improve their overall well-being.

Healthy Lifestyles Programs educates members and encourages healthy behaviors involved in active participation. Through an IBC plan, members can be reimbursed for fitness center costs, weight management and smoking cessation costs. Consumers can also receive alternative health discounts and are eligible for the Baby BluePrints Maternity Program.

In addition, the Connections Health Management Programs helps consumers with chronic illnesses make smart health care choices and better manage their condition. Through this program, IBC members can receive personal attention from a Health Coach. Members also receive information and health reminders in the mail.

History of Independence Blue Cross

IBC started operating in 1938 as the first prepaid hospitalization plan in Philadelphia. Originally, Independence was known as the Associated Hospital Service of Philadelphia. In its first year of operation, it provided coverage for more than 160,000 consumers.

By 1958, the Associated Hospital Service of Philadelphia was handling 3,000 inquiries a day and contracted with 94 hospitals. It became known as Independence Blue Cross in 1988, and is now the region's largest health insurance company.

Independence Blue Cross is an independent licensee of the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association (BCBSA). Insurers in the Blue Cross Blue Shield family cover an estimated 88 million people and have become a health care industry leader nationwide.

IBC Today

Independence Blue Cross helps set corporate standards for social responsibility and community involvement. They currently are partnered with Philadelphia Academics, Philadelphia Youth Council, Pennsylvania Youth Council, Customer Service Training Collaborative, Life Science Career Alliance and Pennsylvania Business Leadership Network.

The IBC Blue Crew is an outreach program that connects Independence employees with various volunteer service projects. In 2008 alone, Blue Crew members donated 8,350 hours of community service in 125 projects.

IBC also runs a Summer of Learning Internship Program that is designed to train college students in their area of concentration.

Independence Blue Cross has received many awards for the community service projects, including the Pillar Award and Habitat for Humanity Award and have been recognized by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Resolution for Community Commitment, and the National League for Nursing.
