Louisiana residents with pre-existing conditions will be able to get health insurance coverage through the high risk pools set up by the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.

The Pre-Existing Condition Insurance Plan (PCIP) in Louisiana will act like Louisiana health insurance plans and requires enrollees to pay monthly premiums and out-of-pocket costs.

Individuals in the Louisiana PCIP will pay around the same amount that people without medical conditions pay for health insurance coverage. The estimated monthly premium costs for Louisiana residents will be $317 for ages 0 to 34; $380 for ages 35 to 44; $483 for ages 45 to 54; $675 for ages 55 and older. The yearly deductible that must be met before health insurance coverage kicks in is $2,500 and the plan has an out-of-pocket limit set at $5,950 a year.

Louisiana residents will have health insurance coverage for hospital and doctor visits, prescription drugs, emergency services and more.

Individuals can apply for the Louisiana PCIP program if they have a pre-existing condition, have been without health insurance for six months and are a United States citizen.
