The U.S. Senate recently passed new legislation that requires mental health care to have equal health insurance coverage as physical illnesses. The measure was approved in a unanimous vote, reported the New York Times.
In 1996, a bill was passed that took away many restrictions on the coverage of mental illnesses and conditions. The Senate bill today essentially adds regulations for copayments, deductibles, and treatment length.
“This new legislation will bring dramatic new help to millions of Americans who today are denied needed mental health care,” said bill co-sponsor, Massachusetts Senator Edward Kennedy.
