Today, President Bush vetoed the bill that would have expanded the state"s Children"s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) to over 4 million children around the country. The program officially expired at the end of September, and legislation would need to be passed to continue federal funding.
The veto of the bill had been promised by President Bush for some time to ward off any steps toward universal, government-run health care.
So far, the White House has not shown a willingness to come to the negotiation table. But Senator Trent Lott expects they will now that the bill has been vetoed, reported the New York Times.
