Maryland To Contact 20,000 Uninsured Residents

Health officials in Howard County, Maryland are organizing a mass mailing list to contact an estimated 20,000 lower-income residents who are uninsured and qualify for state-sponsored programs, but aren’t yet enrolled.
The letter will inform residents of the health care programs in which they may be eligible, and instructs them to contact the Howard Health Department for more information. Maryland’s state comptroller, Peter Franchot, will help the effort by preparing the mailing, reported the Washington Post.
“[The comptroller’s office is] very interested and excited to help Howard County find individuals who might be eligible for affordable health care. We’ll see what we can do to make this work,” said Christine Duray, who is a spokesperson for the comptroller.
The letters will go to any resident in Howard County that earns less that 300% of the federal poverty level. Many individuals and families are unaware they qualify for subsidized health care, and this campaign is likely to get more people enrolled in coverage.
But residents aren’t required to respond to the letter.
“The response is voluntary,” said Peter Beilenson, the Howard County Health Officer. “We’re trying to get as complete a list of uninsured people as possible.”
