USA Today Poll Shows Support For SCHIP, But Not For Dropping Private Health Coverage

A USA Today/Gallup Poll of 1,009 adults last weekend found that there’s still no argument whether or not the state Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) should be renewed. But the poll did show that a slight majority are worried that the program’s expansion as Democratic lawmakers have passed will give incentive to move away from private coverage.

“[Fifty-five percent] are very or somewhat concerned that the program would create an incentive for families to drop private insurance, ” reported USA Today.

“[Fifty-two percent] agree with Bush that most benefits should go to children in families earning less than 200% of the federal poverty level, ” the poll also found.

However, the poll also showed that the people are more confident in the Democrats to deal with SCHIP, rather than President Bush. Only 32% are confident in the president, while 52% have confidence in the Democrats.

So what do these numbers really say? The president and Congress will have to come up with a compromise on SCHIP. That’s not too much of a surprise.
