Facebook: The Young Voice For Universal Health Care
Tuesday Dec 04, 2007Facebook: The Young Voice For Universal Health Care in Politics and Legislation
Facebook is one of the most popular and fastest growing online social networking sites. Create a profile, meet new people, share your interests… and advocate universal health care for America.
More than 20 groups were created on Facebook to show support of national health care reform and universal coverage. Some of these groups, such as “Universal Health Care 08,” have hundreds of members. The group “Education and Healthcare Should Be Free for All” has over 1,000 members.
So why are young Americans taking a stand for universal health care?
More young people are becoming worried about being able to find health insurance. That’s because once they graduate from college, they lose their parents’ coverage. And potential employers who are offering health plans to new, young prospects are waning.
As a result, young people make up a large percentage of the uninsured population in America — 39% of the uninsured are under 30 years old, according to a study by the Kaiser Family Foundation.
One way young people can voice their concerns is to vote for the presidential candidate in 2008 that best lines up with their health care and insurance views.
But young people have been famously poor at coming out to vote in elections. So will the health care issue be enough to get them to the ballot box?
The Iowa caucuses are just a month away, so we’ll have to wait and see if the young vote makes a stand.
