Ready For a Healthy Super Bowl Sunday?
Thursday Jan 31, 2008Ready For a Healthy Super Bowl Sunday? in General Healthcare
The Super Bowl is a time for friends, football, food, and the new commercials. Hopefully it will be an exciting game in Arizona between the New York Giants and the New England Patriots.
We think of the big game as a time for fun — but have you ever thought of the Super Bowl as a hazard to your health?
One study in Europe made a connection between exciting sports events and increased risk of heart attacks and other heart-related emergencies, reported the Boston Globe.
Results of the study found that the overall number of heart health emergencies doubled during the 2006 World Cup in Germany, when the German team played. The cases in men tripled during the World Cup.
The Boston Globe also reported that European and American sports fans are historically different. But Dr. Gerhard Steinbeck, the study’s author, believes the study could be a valid warning for Americans. People with the highest risk are those that already have heart conditions.
“I know a little bit about the Super Bowl. [But] it’s reasonable to think that something quite similar might happen,“ said Dr. Steinbeck.
Researchers for the study partly blamed the higher heart-related emergencies on junk food, overeating, and alcohol consumption.
