North Carolina Begins Mental Health Parity
Thursday Jul 03, 2008North Carolina Begins Mental Health Parity in Individual Health Insurance
Last year, lawmakers in North Carolina passed a law that requires
health insurance companies to provide equal coverage for mental and physical
health conditions.
In fewer words, it’s called “mental health parity.”
Starting this week, that law went into effect. Now all health insurance companies in the state won’t be allowed to set higher copayments or lower coverage maximums for condition such as depression or anxiety, reported the Winston-Salem Journal.
“The things that we’ve been preaching — as far as early intervention, prevention, all those things that we’ve heard for so long on the physical-health side — we’re now going to get to see them on the mental-health side,” said John Tote, executive director of North Carolina’s Mental Health Association.
Short post today, but we’d like to wish everyone a great Independence Day Weekend!
