Tennessee Governor Phil Bredesen is leading a new campaign to get
more children insured in the state through CoverKids, the state’s
Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP).
As part of the campaign, students in public schools will be sent home with a flyer that provides parents directions for enrolling their children in the state-subsidized health insurance plan.
In the flyer, there’s a stamped mailer for parents to request an application for CoverKids or to have program representative call, reported The Jackson Sun.
“I encourage every parent to look for the CoverKids information in their child’s back-to-school packet and to take the necessary steps to enroll any child who doesn’t have health insurance,” instructed Governor Bredesen.
According to the article, children in families earning up to $53,000 annually qualify for state financial assistance for coverage.
There are no deductibles for the plan, comprehensive coverage for preventive care and doctors’ visits, and prescription drug coverage.
If a family earns more than $53,000 a year, they can still enroll their children for premiums of $225 a month for each child.
“Providing children with quality health coverage is one of the best investments we can make in their future,” explained Governor Bredesen.
