States Get Federal Grants For High-Risk Health Insurance Pools in Individual Health Insurance

poolIn an effort to expand health insurance coverage across the country, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is providing 31 states with grants to fund their high-risk health insurance pools.

In total, a reported $49 million will be split among the 31 receiving states.

A high-risk pool is designed for those who cannot find coverage in the private market because of their health status of pre-existing health conditions.

In most states, health insurance companies can turn an applicant down for coverage if they have health problems that will likely turn into expensive claims.

But the high-risk pool provides coverage for any person with health conditions. The only downside of these pools is that the coverage can be very expensive.

That’s where the federal grants come in. With the extra funding, the pools can lower premiums for policyholders.

The article didn’t specify exactly which 31 states were getting grants, but there are actually 33 states that have high-risk pools. Here they all are, courtesy of the Kaiser Family Foundation
