During the 2008 presidential primary campaign, now-President Barack Obama took a stand on health insurance reform and said the only Americans who should be required to obtain health insurance is children.
His stance, in fact, was one of his most often attacked policies by contender Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
Candidate Obama always advocated a mandate for children, but maintained his difference with candidate Clinton on the mandate-for-all issue.
Times have changed. Obama won the election, the primary is in the past, and the president now said he would be open to a reform plan that required everyone to purchase health insurance, reported The New York Times.
His position’s modification is not surprising, however. Just about all of Congress plus the health insurance industry wants a mandate for everyone to purchase health insurance.
The thing is, lawmakers want to avoid the word “mandate. ” Why? It sounds far too socialist.
