When the Affordable Care Act came into effect just a few years ago, many colleges and universities realized they could not afford to sponsor student health insurance.
Academic HealthPlans saw this as an opportunity.
“The Affordable Care Act put more pressure on students and schools to recommend ways for students to access health coverage,” said Academic HealthPlans CEO, Terry Lyons.
With this in mind, Academic HealthPlans partnered with GoHealth to create Edusure, often referred to as the “1st Student Health Insurance Marketplace.” Lyons believes this product is the answer to the challenges students face when it comes to finding the right plan.
“Everything is being built around what works for the students,” he said.
Edusure is a health insurance Marketplace tailored specifically to the unique needs of students. It provides students with an easy-to-understand guide to health insurance, as well as helpful features like a tax subsidy calculator and decision support tool. All of these tools and features are incorporated into a familiar, simple shopping layout powered by a proprietary technology platform.
In addition to these features, students can speak with a licensed insurance agent. These agents are health insurance experts who are standing by to answer questions and make plan recommendations quickly and easily over the phone.
Edusure provides health insurance to students at over 130 universities, and services are available to schools that may not offer health coverage, or who are simply interested in providing students with another health insurance resource. Customized Marketplace pages are offered for the schools, featuring their colors, logos, and campus photos.
The driving goal of Edusure is to make sure students who have never purchased health insurance before experience an easy process and enroll in a plan.
“Students aren’t going to school to learn about insurance,” says Lyons. “Everything is being built around what works for the students, not us.”
