The anticipation is over – Men’s Health Month is here! Never heard of it? Well, that’s what the GoHealth Coverage Corner blog is here for! The goal of Men’s Health Month is to heighten awareness of preventable diseases among men and boys and encourage early detection and treatment.
The Men’s Health Month mission is accomplished in a variety of ways: screenings throughout the country, media outreach, health fairs, and health education activities.
Health Facts About Men:
- In 1920, women lived one year longer than men on average. Today, men die an average of six years earlier than women.
- Men are 100 percent less likely to visit a doctor for an annual visit.
- 92 percent of the victims of workplace deaths are men.
- Men die at higher rates than women from the top 10 causes of death.
Men and Mental Health
The statistics about the mental health of men are staggering. Depression in men and boys is often goes undiagnosed. Some argue that this is because of the stigma of being considered ‘weak’ if you are experiencing depression or other mental issues.
Clearly, there is a need in our communities for educational outreach activities surrounding men’s health. For much more information on how you can get involved, visit MensHealthMonth.org.
Take good care of yourselves, gentlemen. Not just this June, but all year round.
