What Is a Provider Network?
One of the innovations introduced by managed care health plans was the “provider network.” These networks are groups of doctors, hospitals, and medical specialists who provide health care services to plan members at a discount. By taking advantage of this discount, the health plans are able to keep costs low for their members. And the care providers benefit by getting more patients referred to them by the plan.

When you’re choosing a plan, it’s a good idea to look its network. It pays to ask:
- How large is the network?
- Are there in-network doctors and hospitals conveniently located near me?
- Is my doctor part of the plan network?
Some plans will still give you coverage even if you receive care outside the plan network — but you’ll have to pay more for that care. Some plans — such as HMO plans — won’t cover any care from out-of-network providers.
