Nationwide's History

In 1925, Nationwide started selling auto insurance in Columbus, Ohio. Back then, they weren't known as Nationwide. They were called Farm Bureau Mutual Automobile Insurance Company.

The new auto insurance company was incorporated by the Ohio Farm Bureau Federation to provide affordable insurance for rural drivers. As the company expanded, they began moving into other states and other types of insurance. By 1943, they were operating in 13 states and the District of Columbia, offering auto and property insurance.

In 1955, the Farm Bureau officially changed its name to Nationwide Insurance to reflect their business expansion — an expansion that would eventually reach every state in the U.S.

Today, Nationwide is a provider of health, life, auto, and property insurance, along with retirement and investment solutions. They also offer banking services, such as home loans. Their corporate headquarters is still in Columbus, Ohio.

Currently, Nationwide only provides comprehensive health insurance plans in California and Ohio. They specialize in managed care PPO plans, which have created statewide networks of health care professionals.

Nationwide's Lifestyle health plans offer 100% coverage after the high-deductible is met, and provide up to 4 doctor's office visits and preventive care for a low copayment. They also offer prescription drug coverage.

The PPO Choice health plan offers coverage for preventive care, immunizations, and prescription drugs. Members have a choice of deductibles to choose — $750, $1,500, or $2,500.

The PPO Choice Saver Select health plans are high-deductible plans compatible with Health Savings Accounts. The PPO will provide members with catastrophic coverage, and the Health Savings Account funds will help pay for routine and minor medical care.

In other states, Nationwide offers their GrouProtector accident insurance coverage for many different kinds of groups.
