Choosing Humana
Humana understands people looking for better health insurance need options to compare. And with a variety of affordable health insurance options, Humana offers access to a large network for high-quality care.
Health plans from Humana are available in 23 U.S. states.
Humana's History
In 1961, 2 young lawyers from Kentucky, David A. Jones and Wendell Cherry, had started a nursing home business.
Jones, Cherry, and 4 friends each invested $1,000 to create Heritage House and Extendicare. By 1968, the company owned 7 nursing homes. Then they decided to expand their business and acquired Medical Center Hospital in Alabama.
Heritage House and Extendicare finally became Humana, Inc. in 1974 and focused on the hospital business. During the early 1980's Humana had become the largest hospital company in the world — owning over 80 hospitals around the globe.
Humana expanded into the health insurance industry in 1984, offering affordable HMO plans.
These days, Humana offers a range of health plans for the needs of individuals, families, and businesses. And they're still in Kentucky with headquarters in Louisville.
The Humana Foundation
Staying involved in the community and helping Americans build healthier lives is the Humana Foundation's mission. They were founded in 1981 and support community initiatives and charitable activities.
The Foundation's focus is on health care, education, culture, and disaster relief.
They've pledged hundreds of thousands of dollars in the past few years for programs such as Louisville's City of Parks, and for the YMCA of Southern Indiana in their effort to promote child care, children's health, fitness, and wellness.
They help to support schools specialized for students with disabilities, and reward scholarships to children of Humana employees.
Immediately after Hurricane Katrina ravaged the Gulf Coast, the Foundation donated $500,000 to the American Red Cross. They also set aside $500,000 more for any additional needs during the hurricane relief.
In 2005 alone, the Humana Foundation contributed $7.27 million to non-profit organizations and community programs all across the country.
