For residents who have been turned down for coverage because of a pre-existing health condition, they can get coverage through the Indiana health insurance high-risk pool, the Indiana Comprehensive Health Insurance Association (ICHIA). To learn more about ICHIA, visit this informational website.

But once a person is accepted into a plan, Indiana health insurance companies are not allowed to cancel coverage because the policyholder becomes sick or gets injured also known as guaranteed renewability.

Indiana Health Insurance High Risk Pools

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act established nationwide high risk pools to provide health insurance coverage for people with pre-existing conditions.

The Pre-Existing Condition Insurance Plan (PCIP) in Indiana will run similar to regular Indiana health insurance plans and require enrollees to pay monthly premiums and out-of-pocket costs.

Indiana residents with PCIP will pay around the same amount that an individual without a medical condition pays for health insurance. The estimated monthly premium costs for Indiana residents are $310 for ages 0 to 34; $372 for ages 35 to 44; $476 for ages 45 to 54; $662 for ages 55 and older. The yearly deductible that must be met before health insurance coverage kicks in is set at $2,500 and annual out-of-pocket limits are $5,950.

Individuals with medical conditions will have health insurance coverage for prescription drugs, emergency services, doctor and hospital visits and more.

Indiana residents are eligible if they are a United States citizen, have a pre-existing condition and have been without health insurance for six months.
