Iowa Health Insurance Laws and Regulations

Under state law, Iowa health insurance companies must follow certain guidelines and regulations. For instance, Iowa health insurance plans are guaranteed renewable in the state meaning insurance companies cannot cancel health coverage if a policyholder gets sick or injured.

For Iowa residents who are denied health insurance, they can receive coverage through the state's high risk pool, the Iowa Comprehensive Health Association.

Individuals looking for coverage after leaving a former employer's group health plan are protected by the federal law, HIPAA. This law forbids insurers from imposing coverage waiting periods or exclusion periods for those who are HIPAA-eligible.

Iowa residents also have a right to stay on their group plan after they leave a job, for a temporary period, according to the federal law COBRA.

Iowa health insurance laws also require that all health plans cover certain medical care, such as:

  • Mammograms
  • Care for pregnant women
  • Contraceptives
  • Vaccinations for children

In Iowa, insurers must also follow mental health parity, which means mental health conditions receive the same benefits as physical ailments.

The deductible for the plan will be $1,000 which must be met before the program will start covering benefits.
