Kentucky Health Insurance Laws and Regulations

As you search for a Kentucky health insurance plan in the private market, it's important to be aware of a few Kentucky health insurance state laws and regulations.

For example, Kentucky health insurance law mandates the coverage of certain medical services, including:

  • Mammograms
  • Diabetes care
  • Medical care for pregnant women
  • Hearing aids for children

Kentucky health insurance companies are also required to set coverage limits and maximums for mental health conditions equal to physical conditions.

There is also a standard health insurance plan that must be provided by all Kentucky health insurance companies. The benefits from the state standard plan are the same from every company, but prices may vary. That's why it's important to compare your options.

The standard plan options include Fee-For-Service (FFS) indemnity plans, HMOs (Health Maintenance Organization), Point-of-Service (POS) plans, and PPO (Preferred Provider Organization) plans.

Kentucky health insurance plans are also guaranteed renewable. This means an insurer cannot cancel coverage if a policyholder gets injured or sick.

For individuals searching for a plan in the private market after leaving a group health plan, insurers are not allowed to require coverage waiting periods or exclusion periods if they are HIPAA-eligible.
