Massachusetts Health Insurance Laws and Regulations

Massachusetts is unlike any other state and requires residents to purchase health insurance or pay a fine. The mandate to purchase Massachusetts health insurance passed in 2006 and the state has celebrated record low rates of uninsured residents since.

There is a Health Care Access Bureau that regulates oversight for small group and individual health insurance policies.

In every Massachusetts health insurance policy there are over three dozen mandated health services provided in the plans. Here are some required services:

  • Screening for breast, cervical, prostate and colorectal cancer
  • Contraceptive services
  • Diabetes-related services and supplies
  • Home health care and hospital care
  • Coverage for speech, hearing and language disorders
  • Maternity health care services

Massachusetts health insurance plans also include autism coverage and the most comprehensive coverage for infertility treatments in the nation.
