The state's laws require all Missouri health insurance plans to provide coverage for certain medical services. The mandated services include:
- Patient care for clinical cancer trials
- Screening for breast, cervical, prostate, and colorectal cancer
- Diabetes care
- Care for pregnant women
- Hearing screenings for newborns
- Vaccinations for children
- Contraceptives
Missouri health insurance law also requires mental health parity, which means mental health conditions must have the same coverage limits and maximums as physical conditions.
Missouri health insurance companies look at an applicant's health status before accepting them for coverage. Residents in Missouri who are turned down for a health plan because of their health status may get coverage through the Missouri Health Insurance Pool (MHIP).
But if a Missouri resident recently left an employer's group health plan and is HIPAA-eligible, they cannot be turned down for coverage. Missouri health insurance companies are also not allowed to impose waiting periods or exclusion periods for coverage.
