Residents in South Carolina with pre-existing conditions will be able to get health insurance from a high risk pool established by the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.

The Pre-Existing Condition Insurance Plan (PCIP) in South Carolina will run similar to regular South Carolina health insurance plans. The plans will require enrollees to pay affordable premiums and out-of-pocket costs.

Enrollees in the South Carolina PCIP will pay around the same amount that people without medical conditions pay for health insurance. The estimated premiums for South Carolina residents are $301 for ages 0 to 34; $361 for ages 35 to 44; $462 for ages 45 to 54; $642 for ages 55 and older. The plan has a $2,500 deductible which has to be met before health insurance benefits kick in. There is also an out-of-pocket limit set at $5,950 a year.

People in South Carolina with medical conditions will have coverage for prescription drugs, doctor and hospital visits, emergency services and more.

Individuals may apply for the South Carolina PCIP program if they are a United States citizen, have a pre-existing condition and have been without health insurance for six months.
