Duncan Hunter
Duncan Hunter is a U.S. Representative from California. He has served in Congress since 1981. Hunter is also a Vietnam Veteran, serving in the United States Army Airborne from 1969 to 1971. He was born on May 31, 1938 in Riverside, California.
Congressman Hunter's Health Care Platform
Hunter's health care reform platform involves bringing down costs using market-based solutions. The U.S. representative from California favors increasing competition in the private health insurance market to drive down rates.
Rep. Hunter would allow Americans to purchase the health plans available in any state, regardless of where they live. He would "unlock" the state's grip on the insurance industry, which may lower health plan prices.
Insurance Transparency and Portability
Hunter would also make information about the prices and quality of health care services more easily available to Americans. He would require hospitals and other care providers to put fee schedules online and make them easily accessible to patients.
Congressman Hunter predicts a free insurance market where people are allowed to buy plans across state lines and compare health care prices will improve the overall quality of care – and make insurance more affordable.
The Federal Government's Role
Hunter also proposes creating a program to let hospitals test innovate new ways to provide the highest-quality and most effective health care. The hospitals who participate in the program will have all expenses covered — any service not covered by insurance will be paid for by the government.
But Hunter opposes universal health care and government mandates for citizens to buy health insurance.
"I believe our health care system and its challenges need to be addressed in a new way that empowers our strongest asset in controlling the spiraling cost of health care: the U.S. consumer," said Congressman Hunter.
