Fred Thompson
Fred Dalton Thompson served as U.S. Senator from Tennessee between 1994 and 2003. From 1969 to 1972, Thompson was an assistant U.S attorney and was appointed as minority counsel during the Watergate Scandal to the Senate Watergate Committee. He is also well-known for his role on the popular television show Law and Order.
Senator Thompson's Health Care Platform
Fred Thompson's health care platform focuses on increasing competition between private insurers and emphasizing personal responsibility in health care choices.
The Federal Government's Role
Thompson says there is no need for a government mandate to make health insurance accessible. Instead, he wants to give health care consumers the information they need to find the plan that's best for their individual needs.
Public programs such as Medicaid and the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) would only provide coverage for Americans who truly need it. People who can afford insurance will get tax incentives to buy coverage in the private market. Thompson does not think that reform will require higher taxes.
Health Care Technology
The former Tennessee senator would encourage health care providers to modernize their methods of care delivery, and invest in health information technology. His platform also calls for more investment in medical research and life-sciences.
Cost-Effective, Portable Health Plans
Thompson also will put a focus on preventive care and chronic disease management programs. Through these cost-effective practices, he hopes to improve Americans' overall health.
He also will ensure that health insurance is portable.
"I think it is best if you, yourself decide what is best for you and your family, with insurance that doesn't have to depend on your employment – coverage that you can take with you if you change jobs – [and] insurance that you may purchase from anywhere in the nation for the best value," said Thompson.
