Medica of Minnesota History
Medica’s history began in 1975. Founded as Physicians Health Plan (PHP), it was the first open-access health insurance plan in the state. In 1991, PHP merged with Share to become Medica. Later merging with HealthSpan to form Allina Health System in 1994, this integrated organization offered both health care and medical coverage. Today Medica is an independent health plan in Minnesota.
